Within each viceroyalty division the materials are grouped by audiencia — Lima, Charcas, etc. Each volume contains about 600 folios, most transcribed by hand, although many were copied by typewriter during the later years of the project. Each volume is preceded by a calendar-index of its documents. Care was taken that copies reflect exactly the originals. The documents themselves are communications by royal officials in the Indies and Jesuit superiors to the crown, royal orders and communications by the Crown, all types of requests and reports on missions, as well as polemics reflecting the long-standing conflicts between Jesuits and officials, or Jesuits and other orders.
